Why are sports physicals necessary?
They allow physicians to identify any conditions that might keep you out of the game or impact performance. It is suggested that these examinations be done six weeks before the start of the sport season.* This time frame allows the opportunity to address and treat an existing injury and/or improve conditioning prior to the start of the season.
*Requirements of sports physicals can vary by sport. Be sure to check with your sports program administrator about the necessary requirements, in order to be cleared to participate. With extended hours, AFC makes it easy to receive a sports physical and return to the game.
What is the difference between a sports physical and a routine physical?
Sports physicals are for clearance purposes to participate in activities and are different from the annual physicals typically done at your primary care office. The goals of a sports physical are to evaluate an individual’s general health, current fitness level, physical well-being and risk of injury. Many team sports require these physicals for eligibility purposes.
